The increased keratinization (also called cornification) of the cells in this layer gives it its name. There are usually 15 to 30 layers of cells in the stratum corneum. WebbThe outermost layer of the Sun’s atmosphere is called the corona, meaning “crown”. The corona is made up of thin wisps of gas that extend outwards into space for millions of kilometres. It is much less bright than the photosphere. This means that we can only see it if the rest of the Sun is blotted out, for example during a solar eclipse.
