The fungi are found in soil and fowl manure, especially in pigeon droppings. Transmission is by inhalation of spores or contamination of wounds. WebCryptococcus neoformans inhabits the soil and is found in bird droppings. It is a relatively common infection in immunocompromised hosts and can cause primary infection. In cytologic specimens, C. neoformans appears as variably sized yeasts, measuring between 4 and 15 μm ( Fig. 36.11 ). Narrow-based budding is observed.
